Hailing from Central Texas, Geto Gala is a group led by vocalists Deezie Brown and Jake Lloyd. Following an initial EP released in 2021, Major League drops as their full-length album debut. Devoted students of classic Houston rap ala the DJ Screw variety, Geto Gala remains rooted in candy slab tradition while paving new roads of cultural exploration. Layers upon layers of lush instrumentation provided by keyboardist Danny Salvidar II carry this album far beyond formulaic simplicity into the general vicinity of Outkast’s The Love Below. But just when things seem to be going full Frank Ocean, Geto Gala reminds us on “Lone Star Stadium” that Scarface is our figurehead and on “Control” that Fat Pat is our inspiration. Then on “Country Rap Tunes”, we hear the recycling of a Big Krit quotable. Recognizing the importance of building upon what has come before them, Deezie Brown and Jake Lloyd embed themselves within the flat, brushy Southern terrain. From this foundation, Geto Gala opens their sound up to go anywhere past…”it’s the same old hymn that grandmother used to sing”, present…”I took you rock climbing, anything to pique your interest”, or future…”I play for the team I own, champagne by the jet whenever I touch home.” Across 10 songs, Geto Gala lands a solid offering, both to the legends of Texas rap and to the r-n-b crossover fans of today.
