Mac Minister

Interview by Scott Bejda
From Murder Dog vol. 13 #3

You’re incarcerated right now. How long have you been in there?
I have been locked up since March or April so about six months. I’m in the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas. We are getting ready to go to trial real soon.
How is your case looking?
The case is looking real good because they rushed the judgment and don’t know what they are talking about. I also got good representatives to represent me to the fullest and I know I am going to win.
For the people who haven’t seen America’s Most Wanted or read the headlines, what are they trying to get you with?
They’re trying to charge me with a double homicide and make it seem like there is a Rap war jumping off between Kansas City and The Bay. That is not the case at all. They used me as a scapegoat because I am affiliated with a lot of rappers that is big. In order to make this shit big you have to fuck with somebody that’s big. They are always trying to bring the rappers down, so I guess I was nominated, elected, and chosen.
For the record, did you have anything to do with the murder of Fat Tone?
I am completely innocent and I had nothing to do with that. As a matter of fact, I was trying to help the man get on because he was an extraordinary artist. Hell naw!
I never thought there was a KC and Bay war because KC and The Bay are real close in the Rap game!mac minister
Exactly, exactly! Just like with Mac Dre, don’t nobody know what they did to Mac Dre. He passed away in Kansas City and the homie Fat Tone died out in Vegas but that don’t mean that a rapper killed either one of them.
If you beat the case will you be able to get reprimanded from the state?
Fa' sho, but really I’m just counting on my freedom. We are surely going to beat it and if I have to go through all of the stages then I’m gonna be looking for some compensation for my incarceration. At the same time I’m just trying to move on with my life and get what I got. What I got is a gift with music and I have the ability to entertain people from a toddler to a senior citizen. I want to be out there to promote my music and be with my family. I miss my daughter so much it’s crazy. She will get on the phone and talk to me and make a grown man cry. There is nothing in the world that can measure up to her. I would never put myself in a position to jeopardize myself from being able to be with her. With this whole thing with them it’s like any nigga will do. They have been doing shit like this and I’m nominated, elected, posing, and chosen to be that muthafucka that they are fuckin’ with.
Were you watching America’s Most Wanted the night the show aired in which you were featured on?
I didn’t see it but I heard about it and I still don’t believe it. I was walking down the street and I saw some people who were fans of mine and really had some love for me that I really didn’t know, and they said, “Mac Minster they are looking for you. What you walking down the street for?” They were concerned like that!
What was your reaction when you heard that?
I was a little stressed because I had to get this album done and a lot of that album got done while I was incarcerated. I was trying to get all the people to finish their parts and it was difficult but somehow I got it done.
Do you believe what they were telling you?
It really didn’t hit me like that but it did at the same time. I wasn’t happy about the shit like that because I knew I had an album coming out and I didn’t want to be incarcerated without my album being done.
How much of the album was completed at that time?
Everything was done. It was just that other people’s verses were not in order. I had to keep calling Too Short and I was blessed with Short to say, “Man have your brother drop off the Pro Tool and I will take it to Atlanta.” He really came through for me on there and it was a masterpiece!
What was it like to work with Too Short?
Short is legendary and he is the boss of the Bay and it was a blessing to be fucking with Too Short.
What’s the name of the album?
“The Mac Minister Of Defense”, it will come out September the 26th. The project is an incredible full album that you can listen to from front to back. I got some game for you on every song and there ain’t no skip through’s or none of that. Everybody is going to like everything on it! I think this is the best thing I did because it’s all me. You have a few features like Too Short, and I got San Quin on there and I got Trev-G on there who is an artist from Fillmore and he is immaculate. But it’s mainly me.
Who did the production for you on the album?
I got some LT Hutton, some Sean T, Mike B from Fillmore, and some others.
How would you describe your overall style?
It’s straight at you, uncut and raw with no additives or artificial flavors just straight real. It is 100% all the way!
Who is putting your album out?
It is a joint venture between my label, which is Mac God Entertainment “MGE”, and SMC.
What is your main goal for this album other than selling a lot of units?
I just want it to reach and preach and really lace people up and hopefully they can learn something from what I am going through and get some game out of it.
Are you from Frisco or Vallejo?
I’m from Fillmo'!
How long have you been rappin’?
I have been a rapper all of my life because it is just natural for me to spit it to where it just comes out and the words connected. That’s why they call me the Mac Minister because I have a preacher minister style.
How many albums have you put out?
This is really my first album, but I have featured with a lot of people like Snoop because I have been fuckin’ with Snoop since he left Death Row. I did some shit for Cash Money and I did some shit with E-40 before we had our misunderstanding and brawls. I have fucked with a lot of people like Yukmouth!
You were the one that got into it at the Source Awards! Did you guys ever squash all of that?
How frustrating is it for you right now being in there?
People can’t understand the emotion of an innocent man and what he has to go through on a regular basis because they got count time, they wake a muthafucka up at three in the morning to eat breakfast, and eat lunch at ten and eat dinner at three thirty. I’m not used to eating like this because I am use to eating real elegant food and I’m a picky person. Then you got wearing the same clothes every day in sandals with no tennis shoes and there is a lot of bullshit jumping off in here.
Has your daughter been up to see you in prison?
I really can’t take my little daughter coming up in here and seeing me have to walk away, because I’m a real emotional guy and I really love my daughter. There is a lot of things that I can’t really answer for her, and she can’t understand why daddy is on the other side of the screen talking on the phone because she wants to go give me a hug. When she talks to me on the phone she says “Daddy when are you going to pick me up?” It’s wild.
When do you go to trial?
The trial is set for September the 11th. I don’t know what is going to happen on the 11th, but we are going to go up in there and find out that day. I got a good lawyer and the shit is really bullshit because it is not about me proving that I didn’t do it instead it is about them proving that I did do it. From the shit that I read I could beat this myself but I got a good lawyer. The case is full of shenanigans!
What have your fans been saying?
A lot of people have been telling me to keep my head up and they know I will come past this. They really lift me up.
You have upcoming guest appearances other than your album?
I’m going to be on the Snoop album that is going to drop this November and on the song it is me, Snoop Dog, Young Jeezy, with Nate Dogg on the hook. I’m also on the Game’s new album “The Doctor’s Advocate”. I have really been blessed.
You are like the only rapper who has been on America’s Most Wanted! Do you ever think about writing a book about all of this?
I’m just focused on getting home and really praying to get home. I’m not trying because I am going to get home. I want to go to trial more than they do.
How are the other people in the prison taking to you?
There are a few cats who walked up to me and said, “Are you from America’s Most Wanted?” I said no! They have all kinds of jailhouse snitches and muthafuckaz around here infiltrating so I really try to stay low key and I don’t talk to nobody. I’m on some antisocial type of shit around here. I have been duckin’ and staying out the way like the invisible man, staying in my cell.
What do you do all day in your cell?
I do mental gymnastics and a lot of reading and writing. I do my push ups, shoulders, squats, and pull ups. When you are in a certain situation it is about being disciplined and I stay focused and stay praying to Allah.
Have you ever done time before?
I went to YA back in the day from 88-90 and when I got out of the Youth Authority I went to the Pen in San Quentin. Then there was there other institution in Southern Cali called Chuckawala. I did some time before but I have never been in a situation where they are trying to keep me here the rest of my life or lethal inject me.
